Singing audition

Choosing songs to practice singing is different than choosing singing audition songs. You want to practice songs that expand and challenge your vocal technique. But songs for the audition should highlight your strengths and accomplishments from all those long hours of practice.

It’s important to choose one ballad and one up-tempo song when you get ready to audition.Within your choice of songs, you need a variety of stories, acting choices and range. Singers are usually ballad lovers or ballad haters. If you’re a singer who loves ballads it will be hard to choose your favorite. Try to find a ballad you can really get into, so the slow tempo ones sections won’t seem so long. It’s safe to say the hardest part of any audition is choosing the songs. The perfect audition song is one that shows off your talents and it can take time finding the right match for your abilities. This artful skill takes time to develop, so keep looking at songs to continue expanding your book of songs.

The number one priority when picking your songs is to have plenty of variety. A little variety gives you an opportunity to show off a well-balanced set of song skills. Song number one can be a song that shows off glorious high notes and song number two may have a sassy belt that shows off your ability to change gears quickly.

You definitely want songs that will show off your strengths and versatility. Always make sure you search for songs that show off high notes once you’ve finished your belt song. Remember when you’re dealing with range, be sure to demonstrate the lowest and highest points that feel comfortable. The biggest thing that you want to avoid is having every song be the same kind of character and same kind of vocal sound coming out of your mouth, because the auditioner won’t get to see that you’re a skilled actor who can sing and play different kinds of roles and can add variety and spice to your character’s life throughout the show.

Singing a pop song will probably be one of your stipulations, but don’t be afraid to also choose an early musical theater song, later songs, pop/rock songs or anything else to accompany it. Often singers confine themselves to singing contemporary songs. Hey, it’s a great choice, but there is a lot to be said for a singer who can portray an earlier time period.

At your audition, remember that they’re looking at you from the minute you walk in the door and not just when you sing. You want to show your body and look great in your outfit. Think about what the character looks like. You want to suggest the character but not dress exactly like the character. Also remember that you may not be cast the first time you audition, but you need to make a good impression. Sometimes directors ask you back to audition again so make sure that you’re outstanding every time you audition and not just on a good day.
