Windy Times On Greece Cheap Holidays

People come on Greece cheap holidays for a variety of reasons, perhaps to see the historical sites or to soak up the sun but many sportspeople seek out this European country to kite surf and windsurf. Greece really is one of the best places to come for these sports. So much so, that the professional association of world windsurfers, the PBA, stages the World Championship every year since 1993 on the island of Paros in the Cyclades. No wonder windsurfers seek out cheap holidays in Greece. There are also quite a few clubs which give lessons in these sports to those that want to take it up.

So what makes Greece the ideal venue for these sports? It’s all in relation to the wind. In particular, the winds that blows across both the Aegean Sea and the Ionian Sea. The best area to practise kite surfing is by the Aegean Sea. The ‘Meltemi’ (the wind blows across from the north of the Aegean throughout the summer) is a key reason why conditions here are so perfect. This wind here reaches a peak in July and August and blows almost constantly from May to September. The intensity of the wind depends on the region, but it varies on a day-to-day basis.

Two islands in the Cyclades here are noted for their kite surfing potential. They are Naxos and Paros. This is why lots of kite surfers come to this areas whilst on holidays in Greece. The wind that blows across the Ionian Sea in the summer is called the ‘Maistros’, It comes from the north-west and is not so strong or as constant as the Meltemi. However, in some areas like Vassiliki and Agios Ioannis in Lefkada Island, there are strong thermals which compensate for this. There are loafs of kite surfing clubs in Greece. One of the best is located in the bay of Mikri Vigla. This has been named the Thalasea Sports Centre and is situated on Parthena Beach. Here, you can get lessons from many experienced kite surfers. The bay has some of the strongest winds in the Cyclades, making it an ideal place to enjoy the sport. You’ll struggle to find a destination that is so close to the UK which has great wind conditions. The Pacific coast is quite a trek and you may find that the waves are a bit too big!
